HOW LONG DO DENTAL IMPLANTS TAKE TO FIT?
Implants are fitted in a two-stage process from our clinic in Milton Keynes:
Firstly, the abutment is fitted into the jawbone. This is a titanium fixing that creates the base to which the implant is fixed. This is a same day procedure and can be carried out without the need for sedation. However, sedation is available for patients who prefer it. A temporary implant will then be fitted to the abutment while we wait for the abutment to settle down and heal. The tooth is designed to match your smile and will not look out of place in your mouth. We can always make some minor adjustment should it be needed.
Once this has been done we will craft a brand new porcelain tooth for you that fits your smile perfectly. This will then be fitted, completing the dental implant procedure.
CAN I HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS AT CLAYDON DENTAL IN MILTON KEYNES?
The procedure is carried out from our brand new, purpose built dental theatre in the centre of Milton Keynes. It is located on Atlas Road, next to the Waitrose and across from the Costa.
We have invested in the most advanced dental technology available to help us provide you with the best result possible. Even though the clinic has only been open for a short amount of time, we have already booked treatments for many patients in Milton Keynes.
SO HOW MUCH DOES THE TREATMENT COST?
This is a difficult question to answer as the treatment scale is so varied. A single dental implant costs £1,750 plus restoration. However, multiple dental implants work on a sliding scale to make them more affordable for larger treatments.
ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS A NEW TECHNOLOGY?
Dental implants have been around for over 20 years now, however, the technology is always improving. They are becoming increasingly popular as a replacement for dentures and other forms of semi-permanent dentistry, as they are much more reliable and don’t need to be removed to be cleaned or to eat.

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
A dental implant is a titanium screw, or as a dentist would say, abutment, that replaces the root of a tooth that has either fallen out or been removed. Once fitted to the jawbone, a new false tooth or veneer is fitted to it to replace the missing tooth.
HOW LONG WILL DENTAL IMPLANTS LAST AND ARE THEY SAFE?
Dental implants have a success rate exceeding 97%, and as long as you continue to care for them there is no reason they won’t last you a lifetime.
Dental implants should be treated as your own teeth. So if you are making regular appointments with your dentist and hygienist this will ensure you get the maximum use out of them and reduce the risk of a replacement being needed in the future.
As with your natural teeth, if you neglect them you may start to see the effects of gum disease and other dental hygiene problems.
As with any surgery, different people’s bodies react in different ways. However, choosing a surgeon that has a special interest in dental implants is essential.
DO I NEED TO REPLACE ALL OF MY TEETH WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS?
No. The beauty about dental implants is that they can be used to replace just one or two teeth, or used to replace an entire upper and lower arch of teeth. This makes the treatment very versatile and therefore suitable to a wide range of dental patients.
ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS ALWAYS USED TO REPLACE MISSING TEETH?
Before finding out if dental implants will work for you, we will need to carry out a dental examination and appropriate x-rays and or scans. This will allow our dentist to assess the health and condition of your oral hygiene, and to find out if the bone of your jaw is adequate to accept a dental implant.
If there is not enough bone to accept the dental implant, we can usually offer you treatment that prepares the jaw to accept one.
Dental hygiene is also important as any signs of gum disease can cause infection when the dental implant is fitted. We may recommend a course of hygiene visits prior to having the dental implant and this will ensure that your jaw and gums are nice and healthy to receive the new implant.
WILL HAVING MY DENTAL IMPLANT HURT?
We do everything possible to make you as comfortable as we can throughout the procedure. We use the latest tried and tested anaesthetic to ensure you don’t experience any pain throughout the procedure.
It is also possible for the dentist to give you a sedative for more complex cases, and this will again reduce any nervousness or discomfort during the procedure.
What happens after the implant has been fitted?
Once the implant has been placed, your jawbone will need to grow around it to hold it in place. This can take several months to achieve.
Usually, you would need to wear a temporary denture or bridge whilst the healing process takes place. However, we may be able to use same-day dental implants meaning the tooth is fitted at the same time as the abutment.
This allows you to leave the surgery with your new tooth or teeth in place, all in one appointment.
ARE THE DENTAL IMPLANTS HARD TO CLEAN?
No. However, in order to prolong the life of the implant, it is important to look after it. Our dental team will provide you with a full aftercare package to maintain your dental implant/implants.
Regular flossing and brushing combined with hygiene visits will ensure, not just your implant, but all of your teeth are kept in the best condition. We usually book you in for a series of hygiene visits after treatment. This gets you used to staying on top of your oral hygiene and we can send you reminders if you wish, to make sure it doesn’t slip your mind.
CAN I STILL GET GUM DISEASE IF I HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Yes. The implant may sit inside the gum, but it does not stop you from developing
gum disease. However, as long as you follow our aftercare procedure and keep up your visits there is no reason you cannot keep on top of gum disease and ensure your gums are in top shape.
CAN I REMOVE MY IMPLANTS LIKE FALSE TEETH?
No. They are permanent fixtures and are essentially like your normal teeth. Should one become damaged we can easily replace the tooth and in most cases this will not require a new abutment to be fitted to the jaw.
If you have dental implants as anchors for semi-permanent dentures, otherwise known as false teeth, you may be able to remove the set of teeth for cleaning.
DO I REQUIRE A DENTAL IMPLANT FOR EACH MISSING TOOTH?
If one tooth is missing it can be easily replaced using one implant. If you have multiple teeth missing it may be possible to use a few implants as anchors and build a
dental bridge to fill other gaps. This will reduce the cost of dental implants and provide a very similar aesthetic result.

ARE THERE CASES WHERE THE IMPLANT ISN’T ACCEPTED BY THE JAW BONE?
As long as we prepare the area to accept the implant before the procedure takes place, it is very rare that it will not be accepted. In the rare case that this does happen the implant can be removed and the cause of the failure assessed. Once we know what caused the problem the issue can be addressed and a new implant placed.
This is very rare and is another key reason to ensure you only use a qualified and experienced dental implant surgeon.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
This is always the big question and we will start by saying that dental implants are not a cheap option.
The reason for this is it takes a very high level of skill to carry out the procedure, and the cost of the equipment needed in order to complete the treatment runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds.
A single implant can start from £2,500. However, the more implants that are needed the more cost-effective the price will become. You don’t simply multiple the number of implants you may need by £2,500, as this would be much more expensive than the treatment really is.

DO I NEED AN IMPLANT OR CAN A BRIDGE BE USED INSTEAD?
In many cases of missing teeth, dental bridges can be used and we do regularly use and offer them at Claydon Dental. The difference is that a dental bridge involves using the teeth either side of the missing tooth to create the bridge. This requires a small amount to be taken from each tooth in order for the bridge to be fitted.
As one tooth has already fallen out, it may be that the teeth either side are not stable enough to be used as a bridge, and reducing these teeth further may unseat them even more.
In these cases, a dental implant would be the best solution. However, don’t rule out a dental bridge if the teeth either side are in good condition.
